The Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) and Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grants can help veterans with certain severe service-connected disabilities adapt or purchase a home[src]. Qualifying conditions are listed in 38 CFR § 3.809[src].
Specially Adapted Housing Grant
SAH GrantHelps veterans with certain service-connected disabilities build, buy, or modify a home to meet their needs.
Maximum: $117,014
Qualifying disabilities:
- •Loss or loss of use of both lower extremities (such that locomotion without braces, crutches, canes, or wheelchair is not possible)
- •Loss or loss of use of both upper extremities at or above the elbow
- •Blindness in both eyes (light perception only) plus loss or loss of use of one lower extremity
- •Loss or loss of use of one lower extremity together with residuals of organic disease or injury, or with loss or loss of use of one upper extremity, affecting balance or movement
- •Severe burn injuries (deep partial thickness or full thickness, 30%+ body surface)
- •ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) rated service-connected
Grant can be used for:
- •Build a specially adapted home on owned land
- •Buy an already-adapted home
- •Modify an existing home to meet adaptive needs
- •Pay remaining mortgage balance on adapted home (if applying for first time and home already adapted)
Special Housing Adaptation Grant
SHA GrantHelps veterans with certain service-connected disabilities modify an existing home or buy an already-adapted home.
Maximum: $22,036
Qualifying disabilities:
- •Blindness in both eyes (5/200 visual acuity or less)
- •Loss or loss of use of both hands
- •Severe burn injuries (deep partial thickness or full thickness, 30%+ body surface)
- •Certain respiratory or breathing injuries from toxic exposure requiring use of a clinically prescribed respiratory device
Grant can be used for:
- •Modify an existing home to meet adaptive needs
- •Help purchase an already-adapted home
- •May be used if living in a family member's home
