Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) can be converted to Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) within a strict window after separation[src]. The 240-day no-health-questions window is the one most members miss. Enter your separation date below to see where you stand.

No data leaves your device. The date you enter is used only to calculate windows in your browser.

Why the 240-day window matters

For 240 days after separation, VGLI can be issued without proof of good health. After 240 days and up to 485 days (485 days, or roughly 1 year and 120 days), VGLI is still available but must be underwritten. After 485 days the window closes permanently and cannot be reopened.

How to apply

Applications are handled by the Office of Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (OSGLI), VA's designated administrator for SGLI and VGLI. Online application, premium estimates, and coverage options are published at benefits.va.gov/insurance/vgli.asp. Premium rates are published by age group and coverage amount on that page.

If the window has closed

VA Life Insurance (VALife) is a guaranteed-acceptance whole-life option for service-connected veterans regardless of rating. Details are at benefits.va.gov/insurance/valife.asp. Civilian term life from a commercial carrier may also be available and is often less expensive than VGLI for younger applicants in good health.
