Primary sources: 38 CFR Part 4, Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs

Federal VA disability compensation amounts are set by Congress and are the same in every state. Florida publishes additional programs that may supplement what eligible veterans receive from the federal government. Verify current rules with the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs before relying on this page for filing decisions.

Federal disability compensation (same in every state)

The VA may rate service-connected disabilities under 38 CFR Part 4 and pay monthly compensation under 38 U.S.C. § 1110 (wartime) or § 1131 (peacetime). The combined-rating estimator computes an estimated monthly amount under 38 CFR § 4.25 if you have one or more rated conditions.

Reported VA processing-time medians for Florida: initial claims approximately 150 days; approximately 365 days for Higher-Level Review. Medians do not predict any individual claim’s timeline. Retrieved 2026-04-25 from VA processing-times publication.

Other Florida-published programs

  • Homestead Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans. Florida veterans with a service-connected disability may qualify for additional homestead exemptions. Veterans rated 100% total and permanent due to service-connected disability may qualify for a total homestead exemption. Source.
  • No State Income Tax. Florida has no state income tax, so VA disability compensation (which is already federally tax-exempt) is not taxed at the state level either. This affects retirement planning rather than VA compensation directly. Source.
  • Veteran Designation on Florida Driver License. A "V" or "VETERAN" designation may be added to a Florida driver license or ID with supporting documentation. Fees for the designation may be waived for certain categories of veterans. Source.
  • Veterans’ Preference in Employment. Florida law provides preference in state and political-subdivision hiring and retention to eligible veterans and some surviving spouses. Preference applies to most competitive positions. Source.
